The Akan and the Language of Adinkra

The Akan are a family of culturally related peoples found mainly in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Our many subgroups include the Asante, Fante, Akuapem, Akwamu, Akyem, Bono, Kwahu, Nzema, Sefwi and Wassa, among others.

Adinkra turns generations of oral wisdom into visual language. Many symbols are rooted in enduring proverbs, folktales, songs and traditional sayings, preserving ideas about unity, courage, leadership, faith and remembrance. More than decoration, Adinkra is a living expression of the art, history and culture of our people.
